Despite of the recent tightening of the German immigration act, there has been an uncontrolled – and quite impressive – invasion of the Asian lady bug in some parts of Northwest Germany. German authorities are stunned. Numerous facades of family homes and shopping malls have been covered with the little red black-dotted foreigner. In contrary to the endemic and well-known German lady beetle, the Asian beetle is endued with a changing amount of dots on its coat and the unique possibility to come in various colors, which is why one also refers to it as “multicolored Asian lady beetle”. Hence, a small number of Asian bugs may also appear black with red dots or just red with a few dots or red with many dots and so on and so forth.
Another distinctive feature is the black “W” on its collar. The German beetle usually wears a black collar with two white tips at the sides.
The Asian lady beetle was first introduced to Germany in the early 1920 to work for gardeners and farmers in the ongoing fight against rebelling aphids on German flowers and vegetables. Back at that time, work VISA for Asian beetles were controlled by the Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture and Forestry and not yet by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This, however, changed in the early 1950s and with the Iron Curtain, contacts to China were only maintained by the Eastgerman side. Yet, temporary swarms of Asian lady beetles could be observed in the Northwestern part of Germany close to the Dutch border. At that time the beetle was mostly employed by tulip farmers in the Netherlands to fight the ongoing battle against the amaranthine aphids. To honor its achievements it was awarded the Dutch name: veelkleurig aziatisch lieveheersbeestje. After the German unity in 1990 Asian lady bugs could be employed again by farmers and gardeners throughout the country.
However, they feel home the most nearby the Dutch border.

Check it out, check it out! My friend S. told me about the PhD thesis of a pretty great girl today and I visited her blog: turns out she’s got a pretty great blog, too.
Her name is danah boyd and you find her here. I absolutely recommend her personal commentary on the latest discrepancy in the current US election campaign with the catchy title “As a woman, I’m offended” and there’s no doubt about it: she’s damn right. I’d be, too … hold on, I AM, too because it just doesn’t matter whether you are an American citizen or not. And if I additionally consider the background of my yesterday’s read on Sarah Palin (and if only half of it were true) I’d say: I am very thankful for the following things in Germany.
a.) In an election campaign peoples’ personal life is usually divided from their work life. E.g. It doesn’t matter if you are gay or not (having two gay mayors in two major cities – you might even say, we have two “gay major mayors” … OK, I stop it, this is serious.) I am not saying that personal issues are never a topic of the discussion -the national tabloids are just as good or bad as all the other tabloids in the world- but I have the feeling that it doesn’t have that much influence on peoples’ decisions.
b.) Election speeches do not have this blunt, propaganda touch and this pathetic … flush. May it be because we don’t want “CHANGE” (actually, why don’t we?) or may we have agreed on a set of values that we don’t need to discuss over and over again or may it be because words such as “Steigerung des Bruttoinlandsproduktes”, “Bekämpfung der Arbeitslosigkeit” or “Verbesserung der Bildungschancen” just seems a fix set of variables without whom an election speech may not be handed out to the politician in question… I don’t have the answer and must admit: Although I am happy about the content in German election speeches (not always but yeah, sometimes we have that) I envy the US politicians for bringing it to the point and actually making it an interesting message.
c.) In our political system it is not possible that one single person has that much power: In the end McCain decided for the first position behind him. (Wikipedia says the following: “In practice, the presidential nominee has considerable influence on the decision, and in 20th century it became customary for that person to select a preferred running mate, who is then nominated and accepted by the convention.” Now, my knowledge is insufficient on how the decision process on the filling of the vice-presidency spot actually works in detail but already thinking about the possibility of ONE guy having more power than people of his party leaves me with an aching stomach – well, this could also be caused by the salami sandwich earlier… .)
d.) … and there are a couple of more points I am also grateful for but don’t have the time to put down.

Charlotte Roche probiert für 3sat Berufe aus
“TV-Moderatorin und Besteller-Autorin Charlotte Roche (“Feuchtgebiete”) ist jetzt für den Fernsehsender 3sat aktiv. Vom 1. Oktober an wird die 30-Jährige wöchentlich montags um 23.10 oder um 23.15 Uhr die fünfteilige Reihe “Charlotte Roche unter…” präsentieren.
Darin arbeitet Roche in jeder Folge in einem anderen Beruf: bei einem Bestattungsunternehmen, als Müllwerkerin, als Jägerin […] .”
Moment mal. Bestattungsunternehmen? Müllabfuhr? Tiere töten? Genau in dieser Reihenfolge? Haben wir uns das denn auch genau überlegt? Nachdem Harald Schmidt mit Lady Bitch Ray den Wortschatz des ersten Deutschen Fernsehens um viele wertvolle Ausdrücke erweitert – und seien wir doch mal ehrlich: aufpoliert – hat, lassen sich die Dritten nicht lumpen und ziehen mit Charlotte Roche nach. Zur Sendezeit der kuscheligsten Bettdecke darf Charlotte, die wir ja alle lieben und deshalb duzen, Randgruppenberufe ausüben und uns darüber erzählen wie das so ist wenn man eben mal arbeitet, also das tut, was wir – als Generation Praktikum – offensichtlich nicht tun. Für diejenigen, die sich bereits mit dem Gedanken angefreundet haben im achtzehnten Semester “irgendwas-mit-Medien” auf ihrer akademischen Laufbahn zu scheitern, kann das Konzept “Ausbildungsberuf” durchaus relevant sein. Außerdem mögen wir Charlotte und wir trauen ihr weil wir sie schon von früher (=VIVA) kennen.
3sat möchte quasi unsere Nussschale vergrößern, unseren nicht vorhandenen Horizont erweitern und ja, tatsächlich soetwas wie eine Perspektive schaffen. Im entferntsten Sinne geht es also um Prävention. Es soll verhindert werden, dass wir tagein-tagaus nichts anderes tun, als die Medien zu konsumieren und sie meinungs- und haltungslos hinzunehmen. Der Auftrag könnte nicht klarer sein: Charlotte, bring das faule Pack weg von der Mattscheibe und hin zu einem produktiven Beitrag für unser wunderbares System.
Damit ist Charlotte natürlich nicht allein auf weiter Flur. Das Erste hat Harald Schmidt und Oliver Pocher, die am Grundvokabular feilen und damit für die Kommunikation und Pressearbeit im Auftrag “Arbeitskraftmobilisierung” zuständig sind. Daneben dümpelt das im Politressort angedockte, leckgeschlagene Schlachtschiff “Anne Will” mit zerrissener Takelage im ARD Hafen der Bildungs- slash Unterhaltungsprogramme. Da Frau Will (nein, sie duzen wir nicht) eher für Konsequenzen als für Prävention ist und es aus dem Wald bekanntlich herausschallt, wie man hinein ruft, quittierte kürzlich ihr Fanclub seinen Dienst; freilich kein Untergang … und ein anderes Thema. Neben Frau Will gab neulich auch Sarah Kuttner ihr Debut im Bildungsauftrag der Öffentlich-Rechtlichen. Sarah, die wir ebenfalls von früher kennen und deshalb duzen, bringt uns bei wie man Kleinanzeigen liest … und dass man überhaupt erst einmal Kleinanzeigen lesen sollte weil es dort von Arbeitsangeboten wimmelt, für die man keine Ausbildung braucht. Weg von der Mattscheibe … .
Das ZDF dagegen widmet sich nun gänzlich der Zielgruppe 65plus und somit der Unterhaltung der deutschen Bundesbürger in ihren letzten Lebensjahrzehnten. Würden diese Gebührenzahler nach einem aufregenden Bingoabend den Fernseher der Seniorenresidenz einschalten und im Dritten hängen bleiben, könnten sie eventuell eine sympathische, junge Frau mit Zahnlücke vor einem Krematorium entdecken, die nicht nur anschaulich das Berufsbild des Bestatters erklärt sondern auch die Funktionsweise eines Hochofens.
Insofern ist ja doch für jeden etwas dabei.
